The first octavo issue (four folio printings appeared in London the same year). John Dalrymple, Fifth Earl of Stair (1720-1789), had previously only published legal work in his capacity as an advocate, but after he lost re-election as a representative peer in 1774 he turned his attention to economics and politics, with particular attention to American affairs. This was his first economic work.
