Notes

The frontispiece in vol. 1 is Freeman's engraving of Bartolozzi's portrait of Johnson. In this copy there appears to have been a composition error in the 'Advertisement' at the beginning of vol. 9: the text occupies two pages, but has been printed on the recto of one leaf and the verso of another (leaving a blank opening between them). This may have been intended to be cancelled - the same text is repeated in vol. 11 on a single leaf.
