FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [iv], xxviii, 471, [1]. Contemporary mottled sheep, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, marbled endpapers, edges red. A little spotting and soiling at beginning and end. Rubbed, edges and spine ends somewhat worn, label lost from spine, short crack to front joint.

The first publication of this major work on elimination theory by Étienne Bézout, in which he proved Bézout's theorem, a fundamental result in algebraic geometry and computation. 'The proof makes one marvel at the ingenuity of Bezout, who, like Euler, not only could manipulate formulas but also had the ability to choose those manipulations that would be fruitful' (DSB).
