8vo, pp. [ii], 377, [19] + frontispiece. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules. Some dustsoiling and light browning. A bit scratched and darkened, label lost, front joint cracked but sound. Ownership inscription of M.A.B. Whitby (1818) to front pastedown and a later inscription to flyleaf.


The second edition of the first major work by the philosopher James Harris (1709-1780), first published in 1744. It covers the widest range of subjects of his published works, and had wide influence: Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of this edition, now in the Library of Congress.
